Gun Hill Brewing Co and the Happy Hour Guys, the creators of the Broadway Brews Project, have joined forces once again, this time to help raise money for the Live Performance Industry. We’re honored that they asked us to create the recipe for Curtain Up!
The Curtain Up initiative is an outgrowth of the Broadway Brews Project, started by The Happy Hour Guys to bring Broadway theatre & craft beer together to raise money for great causes. Prior to COVID-19, they had led the creation of 5 beers (including Rise Up Rye) and were readying to complete the Broadway Six Pack.
During the second week of March 2020, live performance was halted nationwide. Tens of thousands of arts professionals found themselves out of work with no knowledge of when they would return; and now, months later, they face loss of income, health insurance, threat of eviction and more. Live performance is an economic engine: In the 2018-19 season, Broadway alone generated $14.7 BILLION for the New York City economy and supported 96,900 jobs; from stage hands and ushers, to talent agents, actors, managers, and so many more.
Broadway is still shut down, as is nearly all of professional live performance nationwide. And the industry may not be back to full employment until a year after a vaccine is introduced.
The primary mission of Curtain Up is to create a source of relief funding for The Actors Fund, which provides a safety net for entertainment professionals throughout their lifespan. Just since March, they have distributed over $16 million in direct assistance.
This Initiative is about fostering understanding of the need for the arts in EVERY community and supporting people who choose to make live performance their profession, regardless of their color, gender, sexual persuasion, or creed. We are asking brewers who join us to consider doing the following:
Keep what you need, and donate as much of this beer's proceeds as possible to The Actors Fund, or
Keep what you need, donate a generous portion of this beer’s proceeds to The Actors Fund, and an amount to a local arts organization in need

Although this year’s GABF was virtual, the annual competition associated with the event still went on. For the second consecutive year, and third time overall, Void of Light took home a medal. After winning Gold in 2014, Bronze in 2019, the foreign stout won Silver this year.
This is the brewery’s 4th GABF medal. It previously won a bronze for Rise Up Rye in 2018.

It probably makes sense that the most underrated brewery in New York is located in what is arguably the most underrated borough in New York City. Gun Hill, which calls a historically strategic location from the Revolutionary War in the Bronx their home, has been around for half a decade. Founders Kieran Farrell and Dave Lopez met while playing semi-pro baseball in the city (where they still play), and after finding a knowledgeable brewer, set out to create a diverse portfolio. Today, that has resulted in refreshing sours such as the Hessian Weisse, the easy drinking Soft Serve IPA series, and the crowd pleasing Spirit 76 Pilsner. And while these are enough to convert anyone into a fan, no one should miss the award-winning Void of Light stout (and all the variations thereof). -- ZM

Gun Hill is the first to establish a physical microbrewery in the northernmost borough. Since opening in March, the space has quickly become a neighborhood fixture for mechanics and laborers on their breaks; on weekends it’s packed with beer geeks seeking a local pint.
